Mandatory Reporters of Abuse and Neglect

Michigan Compiled Laws § 722.623 sets forth a list of professionals required to report suspected abuse and neglect (including sexual abuse) to authorities. The list includes medical care professionals, school administrators and teachers, regulated child care providers, psychologists, counselors, therapists, law enforcement officers, members of the clergy, and social workers.

A report is required when a mandated reporter has reasonable cause to suspect child abuse or neglect.

Any other person, including a child, who has reasonable cause to suspect child abuse or neglect, may also make a report.

Reports must be made immediately.

Sexual Abuse and Exploitation

Michigan Comp. Laws § 722.622 provides that ‘sexual abuse’ means engaging in sexual contact or sexual penetration with a child as those terms are defined in the penal code.

‘Sexual exploitation’ includes allowing, permitting, or encouraging a child to engage in prostitution, or allowing, permitting, encouraging, or engaging in photographing, filming, or depicting a child engaged in a sexual act.
