On Monday February 11, Jose Cruz Martinez, a former second grade teacher at Rowland Elementary School in Rowland Heights, pleaded no contest to four felony counts of committing a lewd act upon a child and one misdemeanor count of child molesting. According to prosecutors, Martinez inappropriately touched five girls, who were 7 to 8 years old, on the school campus between August 2017 and April 2018.
Martinez denied all charges and faced a maximum prison sentence of 60 years to life. After taking a plea deal with prosecutors, Martinez faces a possible sentence of five years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for March 21.
