On Monday June 10, James Heaps, former gynecologist who worked with students at the University of California Los Angeles, pleaded not guilty to charges that he sexually abused patients.
Heaps worked part-time at the student health center from 1983 to 2010. He had staff privileges at the school’s medical center from 1988 until last year. Heaps faces two counts of sexual battery and one count of sexual exploitation of a patient. These charges are connected to his conduct with two patients at UCLA Health in 2017 and 2018.
According to UCLA, the school began investigating sexual misconduct allegations against Heaps last year. The school proceeded to remove him from practice and moved to fire him. UCLA says it reported Heaps to both law enforcement and the state medical board.
